Explore the endless possibilities of working with a copper plate and learn historical and experimental approaches to the medium of Intaglio Printmaking! We will learn plate preparation, both hard ground and soft ground etching with ferric chloride, along with direct drawing through manipulation of the copper plate’s tactile surface with dry-point, scraping, and burnishing. Create your own plates and explore the printing process, including ink modification and chine colle. Come back in the evening after class to use the studio and further devlop your masterpieces alongside your classmates! You will leave this course with the ability to discern and produce impression quality prints of your plates and an overall understanding of proper press and equipment use. All levels are welcome! Join us in exploring a wide range of handmade techniques within the versatile medium of Water-Based Screenprinting! This Summer Intensive focuses on experimental production of creating hand-drawn stencils and utilizing found objects or Xeroxes to expose screens. We will also explore direct techniques of monoprinting and working with Drawing Fluid and Screen Filler. We will learn all about printing, multi-layer registration, color mixing, and the benefits and limitations of working with water based acrylic ink. We will experiment with the opacity and transparency of the ink, as well as the quality of the ink: matte versus gloss. Screenprinting allows you to print on a wide variety of surfaces - experimentation encouraged! You will leave with the understanding of how to properly coat the screen with photo emulsion using a scoop coater, the use of the exposure unit, differences in screen mesh, as well as the ability to discern and produce a sensitively printed image and small editions. All levels are welcome! No prior experience is required.
