The gallery at Studio Two Three is excited to announce the upcoming show, Land of a Thousand Greetings: Multimedia Impressions from a Visit to Rwanda. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, December 2, from 7:00-9:00pm.
The show will feature photographs, drawings, fabric, and sound by a group of Richmond-based artists who had the privilege of visiting a friend teaching English in the hill-top village of Buyoga, in the country known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The artwork documents or draws inspiration from this brief experience in a very interesting, beautiful and complex country. All proceeds from the artworks and exhibition book will be donated to the International Rescue Committee, Partners in Health and Women for Women International. Contributing artists include Andy C. Jenkins, Dan Owen, Liana Elguero, Matt Teel, Michael Ashley and Tesni Stephen.
Additionally, please join us on Wednesday, December 7th at 6:00pm for a lecture on Vision from the Congo by Richard Woodward, Curator of African Art at the VMFA. This special event is in conjunction with the VMFA’s Vision from the Congo and VCU’s Anderson Gallery’s Environment and Object- Recent African Art.
Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press brings her moveable type truck to town!
RICHMOND, VA - (11/2/11) On Thursday, November 17, letterpress printer Kyle Durrie will pull her Moveable Type Truck into town for an open studio event at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and Studio Two Three. Durrie began her journey in Portland, Oregon, where she transformed a 1982 Chevrolet step van into a mobile print shop. Since June 11, she’s been on the road, making stops in cities across the country to share her love for letterpress.
During her Richmond visit from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Durrie will park in front of the Visual Arts Center at 1812 W. Main St., and guide budding printmakers in creating three-color “Free Range Creativity” posters. Participants will “pull” one color at each location: her truck, the Center’s letterpress studio, and Studio Two Three down the street at 1617 W. Main St., and have a poster to take home.
The event is free and open to the public. Durrie welcomes donations in support of her ongoing travels. For more information about her work and her journey, visit powerandlightpress.com or type-truck.com.
