Studio Two Three will combine a fully operational print studio that enables artists to make quality work, support for innovation and experimentation, and an extensive network of outreach programs to fulfill its mission.
Studio Two Three sees the core of this community arising from the daily operations of its studio space and strives to provide a supportive and stimulating environment for its daily visitors. Studio Two Three enables its renters to make excellent work by providing peer support, access to print skills, and access to quality print facilities. Studio Two Three also works to advance the standing and opportunities of printmakers within the art community by pursuing exhibition opportunities and by creating a network of artists involved in its various endeavors. By providing the means for individual artistic success, Studio Two Three will build an active community of artist-printmakers with productive energy, in turn increasing public exposure to and enjoyment of the printmaking medium.
Studio Two Three wants to play a role in the dialogue about the growing definition of “print”. Traditional forms of printmaking were the earliest technologies for replication; in the past century printmaking and printed items have become an enormous part of commercial culture. Reproduction, multiplication, and distribution are principles that have been integral to print throughout its history, and artists continue to explore and diversify their possible incarnations. Prints are no longer confined to small sheets of paper, or even to two dimensions. Studio Two Three will strive to provide knowledge of emerging print technologies and alternative methods and how they are being used by artists, in order to keep its renters informed of and engaged with print’s expanding definition.
Studio Two Three will engage the Richmond community through an array of interactive programs open to the public. These programs will include artist lectures, collaborative projects, and events involving printing services for other non-profit organizations.
Guided by its staff and Board in order to reach its vision, Studio Two Three will:
- support equality of access to printmaking equipment and technical instruction through affordable prices
- support equality of access to fine art prints through affordable prices
- promote the knowledge of existing and emerging print technologies and definitions with workshops, lectures, and knowledgeable staff
- foster communication among its individual renters, members, and the public through outreach projects and collaborative endeavors
- encourage innovation by creating an environment of creative exchange, in which artists with different types and levels of expertise work side by side to both teach and learn
- support innovation and experimentation by collaborating and publishing prints with artists who work outside of printmaking mediums
- encourage artists to make and talk about art by hosting monthly artist critiques
- provide professional development which enables its interns and mentorship students to serve as effective members of the art community and to open their minds to art management
- create partnerships with existing institutions in order to more effectively reach the Greater Richmond community
